Halal McDonald’s Food Settlement

Sunday, April 21st, 2013

Halal Here is some Monday food for thought, with a blog that is about a food settlement. (Detroit Free Press)

Dearborn, Michigan attorney Majed Moughni, here holding a McDonald’s chicken sandwich that was sold as a halal prepared chicken sandwich. A Halal sandwich means that it was prepared to comply with Muslim religious customs and practices. Halal is the Muslim equivalent to Jewish Kosher preparation.

Any food prepared to receive the Halal preparation designation meets several criteria including how the animal was killed as well as whether prayers were recited to Allah while the animal was killed. Currently, McDonald’s sells halal chicken products at only two of its restaurants in the entire U.S.

A lawsuit was brought against this Michigan McDonald’s restaurant claiming that the food was not truly prepared as represented. McDonald’s did not admit to any wrongdoing but did agree to a $700,000 settlement to resolve the lawsuit.

According to Moughni, the lawsuit and settlement “was positive”. The purpose in filing it was that “it allowed us to educate the public on halal religous customs and practices. It’s a good thing for the community”.

According to the article, there was some objection to the settlement by those participating as part of the Muslim class. Separately, there was some suggestion that McDonald’s was threatening to discontinue serving any Halal prepared food, if they pushed McDonald’s for more. McDonald’s denied any threat on the free speech of its customers.

For pic o’ day, I went with some Monday Cat humor:

A Friday Future Blog

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

The NBC series “30 Rock” was based on the lives of people that worked in TV. In one episode, Alec Baldwin’s character was quizzing Tina Fey’s “Liz Lemon” character on the future and how she invested her money. She kinda hung her head and said,  “I have twelve grand in checking”.

My past few blogs have been a bit negative; because mostly, news is news because it’s not positive. Still, I thought that for a Friday, I would try to post something that would impact us for a better future. Something better than Liz Lemon’s plans. So, here are “10 tips for a healthy lifestyle“; an excerpt from “The Best Diet & Fitness Tips” magazine.

Play mirror, mirror. Write down goals — a certain race pace or a target weight — on your bathroom mirror using a dry-erase marker. This simple act both helps confirm your commitment and serves as an easy and fun reminder to start each day with purpose. (I guess I shouldn’t post “eat more cheesecake” should I?)

Get a dog. Research from Michigan State University shows that man’s best friend can be a powerful motivator to get us to exercise. The researchers found that study participants who owned dogs were more likely to be active than those who did not. In fact, the study found that 60% of dog owners meet federal criteria for regular, moderate or vigorous exercise, compared with around 30% of people who don’t have a dog. (Maybe not so easy to take a cat for a walk)

Head outdoors. Burn calories when you chill out. A study found that going for a 20-minute stroll twice a week was more restorative than getting the same exercise in an indoor environment like a mall.

Heavy, light, heavy, light. To hit the entire spectrum of muscle fibers, set your workouts so that you train heavy one day, then lighter with more reps later in the week.

Train with like-minded people. Working out in a gym with an intense atmosphere, surrounded by people who are equally as passionate about achieving their goals as you are, may push you further and do more for your progress than another factor.

Stay hydrated. Start the day with at least 16 ounces of water. It’s filling, and getting more will improve your recovery after workouts. Aim for one gallon per day.

Cut calories from chicken. Cooking up skinless poultry for dinner is an affordable, easy and fast way to get in quality muscle-building protein. To make it even better for you, skip the swirl of oil and use a tablespoon of water to coat your non-stick plan instead. Cover with a lid and let the chicken steam, then flavor with herbs and spices for a perfectly guilt-free meal.

Rock the oat. You know better than to skip breakfast and risk noshing on extra calories throughout the day. And while oatmeal is a great way to start your morning, you should always aim for balance in every meal. For a little protein and healthy fat, add slivered almonds, and for some fruit, throw in fresh or frozen berries or raisins.

Cultivate gratefulness. Start each day by remembering any experience that recently made you happy — the birthday card you got from an old friend, the compliment your colleague gave you or the tasty new recipe you cooked for dinner. “When negative events happen, people who regularly practice gratitude cope more positively,” says psychologist Alex Wood from the U.K.’s University of Manchester. “They’re less likely to run away from the problem or pretend it’s not happening.” (I do have a wonderful Skinny Cow ice cream recipe. It involves taking wrapper, opening and then eating. Folks seem to like it)

Curl up with a book. Six minutes could be all it takes to curb that frenzied feeling by 60%, say British researchers. So catch up on your overdue reading — even if you have to do it one chapter at a time.

Well, I cannot take credit for creating the list, but I like these good reminders. Yes, the blog title does make it seem like I am writing a blog that will be a future blog. Maybe I am… and I just want you back here reading in 2060!

For pic o’ day, I can’t help but keep laughing at this one that was just sent to me:

Swat Team Tomato Search

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

The family heard a commotion outside their house. The noise had now become banging, pounding and screaming. Then, Robert Harte opened his front door. The Missouri man opened the door just as a battering ram was just about to take the front door down. (KansasCity.com)

Over the course of the next two hours, Harte was forced to the floor while a deputy stood over him with an assault rifle. His two children came out of their bedrooms terrified, with their hands in the air. Then his wife Adlynn Harte and her two children, were made to sit cross-legged against the wall in their foyer, while Mr Harte was still face-down with his hands behind his head.

These Johnson County Deputies from Missouri had barged into this home as part of an anti-drug initiative known as a marijuana holiday. After the raids, the sheriff’s office had publicly declared the entire initiative a success; claiming that throughout the area, they had seized over 43 marijuana plants and one pound of marijuana.

At the Harte household, no marijuana was found.  A few days earlier, the family had purchased indoor gardening equipment to grow small tomato and squash plants in their basement.tomato      However, the family is still unsure why that information, if readily available, had been the basis for a warrant for such a swat-like raid on their home.

The search of their home included rude remarks to the family; threats to their teenage son and even a drug-sniffing dog that was taken throughout the house. After nothing was found by the frustrated deputies, they simply gave the family a receipt to show that “nothing was taken”. There was no apology.

Now, the family has hired an attorney, asking the court to require the sheriff’s department to release all information relating to the warrant and the subsequent search. Originally in the general public announcement about the success of the drug raids, there had been no mention that at least one of the raids had failed to turn up anything.

Curious to the entire fact pattern, the attorney representing the Hartes does note that they had originally met each other while working for the CIA; and that they both, at one time, had top-secret clearances.  As their attorney noted about the lawsuit, “This is about government accountability. These folks have a right to know why they were targeted and why they were allegedly ‘surveilled’.”

According to the only response to date from the sheriff’s department, the Harte family had been under surveillance for months prior to the raid. This is one of those stories that almost seems like an April Fool’s story. Instead, apparently it just involves a bunch of fools with warrants. The cite for the story adds more meat to the outrageous search.

     And then, pic o’ day…

Blog for the Health

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

We are always trying to add more snacks at the office so clients will have something during depositions or preparation. OK, to be honest… so we have some snacks, when the hunger hits at mid-morning.

The following chart was sent to me as part of our health and wellness program that we have at the Firm. It’s something to consider for the next snack. I think it’s also from the “anti-banana society”. Not sure if I agree or not. Here is the Banana V. Cookie attachement. How would the health jury rule?

Of course,  and then there’s this:

The John Alleman Reminder

Monday, February 18th, 2013

This is a sad blog of personal responsibility. WPTV.com reports that John Alleman has been taken off life support and pronounced dead at age 52.

That sentence probably doesn’t mean much to you if you don’t know who he is. I didn’t, until I read the story. Then, I realized that it was a story that was predictable and probably preventable.

Mascot

John Alleman loved the Las Vegas restaurant, Heart Attack Grill. In fact, the restaurant had designed T-shirts and logos that featured him. He was their unofficial mascot and even  featured in a cartoon for the restaurant as “Patient Joe”.

Heart Attack Joe

The nighttime construction worker was never a paid employee, but he became famous because of his love of their food and that he was always there to encourage everyone else to eat the unusual items on the menu.

The restaurant’s menu includes  the 9,952 calorie Triple Bypass Burger; the Flatliner Fries and the Coronary Dog. The Flatliner Fries are deep fried in pure lard.  For dessert, you can order the Butter-fat Shake made from butter fat cream, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavors. In fact, the burger is listed in the Guinness record books as the “most calorific burger” and the menu even warns customers against eating it more than once a month.

Despite all the warnings including being featured as a patient because of the menu, John visited the restaurant to eat there every day. A while back, the local newspaper interviewed the restaurant’s manager. He was quoted as saying that he had told Alleman that, “if you keep eating like this, it’s going to kill ya.”

Alleman is the second Heart Attack Grill spokesman to die. In 2011, 29-year-old  Blair River also died from a heart attack. Still, the restaurant encourages anyone that weighs more than 350 pounds to eat unlimited free food; as long as they agree to publicly weigh themselves on an electronic platform in front of  all the other diners.

It is this kind of mentality that has explained why people smoke cigarettes, despite the warning on the side of the packet. “It’s not going to happen to me”. This story is a sad reminder. Instead, it will probably cause the restaurant to do more business, sell more t-shirts and cause them to make a bigger burger.  Shouldn’t the restaurant have some responsibility or is it just a case of  ”you don’t have to eat here”.

Office Party Report

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Thursday is the Virginia Beach/Richmond office Christmas breakfast. Friday is the South Carolina office Christmas breakfast. We will be posting some video and pictures so we can look at ourselves, several years from now.

That is an evolution of events. We used to do big dinners that involved family. That was fun but became major planning events. Then we went to lunch and half-day off. Now, it’s just breakfast at a nearby restaurant and the rest for… shopping. More time is more time. That’s why everyone was excited about the idea of the “Firm breakfast” instead of the “Firm lunch”. I wonder if next year they will just request coffee and then shopping. It makes me smile.

For pic o’ day, I thought this was funny. Thinking about the theme of “Wants”.

7UP Gets Sued

Monday, November 12th, 2012

The soft drink that seems bubbly and friendly is facing a not-so-friendly lawsuit. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has issued a press release that it has filed suit against the maker of this soft drink, for misleading ads.

The soft drink was advertised to contain an antioxidant in its regular and diet Cherry sodas that gave the impression that the drink contained healthy fruits. The ads included pictures of cherries, blackberries, cranberries, raspberries and pomegranates, on its various labels. Instead, according to the lawsuit, the drinks really contains water, high-fructose corn syrup, citric acid, potassium benzoate and Red dye. The Mixed Berry drink also contains blue dye.

According to the lawsuit, the US Food and Drug Administration should step in where soft drinks are really worthless beverages. It is alleged that one 12-ounce serving of the drinks contain nine teaspoons of sugar and 140 calories. None of that suggests a healthy antioxidant concoction.

Kinda makes me want to run, not walk, from good old 7UP.  I guess that’s not even putting the “lime in the coconut” is it?

For pic o’ day, well, no caption really needed!!!

Law and the Starbucks Diet

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012

This is my official diet request. Isn’t there someone out there who can develop the ice cream diet and have it approved by nutritionists everywhere. I would like it to include the soft cone ice cream from Dairy Queen. Having the cone dipped in chocolate would be helpful. OK, maybe even a peanut butter topping.

I am getting carried away here because a librarian from George Mason law school has come close to this plan. CNN reports that Christine Hall has lost over 80 pounds after she started almost exclusively eating at Starbucks about two years ago.

Hall says that she is eating a healthy variety of foods and has become so familiar with their menu that she knows the calories in everything that she orders. She initially became concerned about her weight after being rejected as a possible kidney donor. She eventually lost enough weight to allow her to be part of a 32-person kidney swap (video here) that was performed in November 2010.

She reports that she typically ate oatmeal and coffee for breakfast; a bistro box with fruit and cheese for lunch; and a Panini for dinner. This 66-year-old now weighs 114 pounds. She’s not afraid to discuss her age or her weight!

I’m not sure if we will start to see Subway’s Jared switch diet teams. I’m guessing that there’s no hope for my ice cream diet. How about the all mashed and baked potato diet. Now we are talking!

For pic o’ day, I went with a dog who must be on the Starbucks plan too:

All… No You Can’t Eat

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

George Dalmon and Andy Miles learned that an offer of “All you can eat” doesn’t apply to them. All you can eat London restaurant “Gogi” says that Dalmon and Miles are “a couple of pigs” and the promotion does not apply to them.

Let’s assess their eating. The men would admittedly each eat five bowls of stir-fry during their regular meals at the Mongolian barecue; which does encourage guests to create their own buffet dishes. Diners are told that they can request “as many meals as you wish”.

Now, the restaurant manager has said that the meal offer does not apply to them. “Basically, they come in and pig out. They are in such a hurry to beat everyone to the food that they spoil everything”.  The manager added, “We are not a charity, we’re a business. They eat everything out of all the bowls before other people can get there”.

The two men reported that they had been going to the restaurant for a couple of years and were stunned when the manager came to their table and told them to leave. They described that, “the owner came to our table in front of all the customers and basically went mental. We were banned for life”.

I guess this is a question of an eating contract. I have always wondered if buffets should be “all you can eat” or “all you care to eat”. As a famous man once said, “When I heard of the evils of eating too much, I gave up reading”. OK, maybe no one has ever really said that.

In the spirit of costumes, pic o’ day looks to the Halloween pups:

Colds and Flu at the Law Office

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

I was at the Old Dominion/Richmond football game on Saturday. Just in case you had not heard; Old Dominion jumped out to a big lead and Richmond made a game of it at the end. One of those “barn burners, nail-biters, seat-squirmers”. Well, not that close. Had to throw that in as an old alumni for ODU… but I digress.

I had my eye on a box of popcorn. That kind of distraction kept me from noticing the woman in front of me who wound up, and then sneezed louder than the band playing. I bobbed and weaved. Fortunately, I think I dodged the germs.

This past week, someone came up to me and shook my hand. Then, she said that I probably should use some of that Purell sanitizer because she was fighting a cold. I offered a frozen smile and headed right to the dispenser. Fortunately, I dodged it again.

At the office, we offer incentives to encourage staff to get their flu shots. We do have hand sanitizer readily available and we encourage healthy lifestyles. You can’t get work done if you’re not at the office.

At Health.com, I saw an article titled “The germiest places at the office”. It is a good reminder to be alert. A Kimberly-Clark study examined 5000 areas in office buildings around the country and this is what they found as the worst places for workplace germs:

Break-room sink faucet handles, microwave and refrigerator door handles, computer keyboards, water fountains and vending machine buttons. Some explanation on those included that the break room is the first place that many stop in the morning, before they have washed their hands.

The article also included a reminder to soap up with hot water after touching common-area surfaces and remember to clean the surface of your desk and phone handles with disinfectant and sanitizer. They also threw in a reminder to regularly use a sanitizer wipe on your computer.

All good ideas as we head into flu season. Got to keep my eyes open, even when I am distracted by the popcorn.

For pic o’ day I am posting a cartoon that was sent to me. A reminder that life is how you look at it!
