DO I HAVE A CASE?

Cornwell Fiction Meets Fact

Patricia Cornwell became famous through her fiction writing. Her stories primarily revolve around Dr Kay Scarpetta, who in the books was initially the fictional medical examiner in Virginia. Cornwell worked for the chief medical examiner’s office in Richmond, before her first novel in the Scarpetta series was published.

Since becoming a best-selling author, she and her character have moved to different locations. Now, a trial is underway in Boston, she has sued her former financial management firm and business manager. (Story)

Cornwell claims to be missing over $40 million dollars and has accused executives at the New Your-based company of Anchin, Block & Anchin of mishandling her finances, making bad investments and even over-billing her. The defendant company claims that Cornwell spent the money; and in their opening in the trial, have indicated that they intend to prove that,  by itemizing Cornwell’s spending habits.

In his opening, defense attorney claimed that Cornwell and her spouse, Dr Staci Gruber, frittered the money away by spending lavishly on private jet service and other things such as renting a very expensive luxury apartment in New York City, that cost $40,000 a month.

The defense attorney told the court, “Where did the money go? Ms Cornwell and Dr Gruber spent the money. You have to consider the large lifestyles involved, the spending habits, the impulsive buying.”

Cornwell’s lawyer argued, “This case is, at its core, about trust. There is no amount of money that is enough to properly compensate her for what Anchin, Block and Anchin did.”

Cornwell claims in pleadings that suit was filed after she learned that her net worth had fallen under 13 million. The Boston trial is expected to last over a month.

Supposedly, Scarpetta is coming to movie theaters soon, with Angelie Jolie playing the starring role of the chief medical examiner. I wonder if the next Cornwell book will have some bad characters named Anchin or Block?

For pic o’ day, I thought that this is something that she may include in her future stories. A Judge making the defendants stand outside the Courtroom with a sign over them.
